COVID-19: Government Response and Other Important Metrics

Public Deposited

This study is in consideration of the spread of COVID-19, the related various government responses, and how these responses and other demographic variables affected the spread and severity of the virus on a domestic (United States) and international level. During the last few months, the virus has spread from its origin point in Wuhan, China to become a truly global pandemic that has affected the lives of people in almost every country in the world. According to 1 the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Frequently Asked Questions , on February 11, 2020 the World Health Organization announced an official name for the disease that is causing the 2019 novel coronavirus outbreak. The new name of this disease is coronavirus disease 2019, abbreviated as COVID-19. In COVID-19, ‘CO’ stands for ‘corona,’ ‘VI’ for ‘virus,’ and ‘D’ for disease. Given the seriousness, speed, and breadth of the spread of COVID- 19, this study intends to analyze the effectiveness of the various government responses in controlling or mitigating the spread of the virus in relation to government response and other associated factors. This will involve the examination of a selection of countries and more in- depth analyses of US states and counties to determine the effectiveness of government response and demographic effects on the spread of the virus. Since there is currently no therapeutic treatment or vaccine yet developed, the government responses and demographics have the most significant effect in the disease progression and may provide meaningful insights. It was found that effective governmental action can have an impact on both state and national levels; however, the relationship between government action and a better outcome associated with COVID-19 cases and deaths is not linear. The demographics and testing factor heavily weigh on the outcome. These factors and an approach to examine the COVID-19 specific data are explained in the report.
